Small and medium-sized enterprises dominate the economy of Germany’s capital region; Berlin-Brandenburg. As the region is highly specialized and flexible, it has become a global market leader in their area. Thereby, it has increasingly become an interesting partner for Chinese companies. Exports from both Berlin-Brandenburg and China has steadily grown in recent years. This is especially true for innovative industries such as aviation and technology, medical technology, biotechnology, information and communication technology, as well as the energy and environmental technology.
Both in 2008 and then 2010, Brandenburg was awarded the “Leitstern” or “Lodestar”, the one state with the most progressive renewable energy policy. Berlin and Potsdam have become a model region for electric vehicles, with strong scientific research potentials. The area’s knowledge centers are highly attractive, therefore often recruited by the research department of Huawei Technologies, a telecommunications equipment company in Berlin.
In Berlin, nearly 40% of Chinese investors are engaged in trade. Investing in manufacturing companies in Brandenburg. In 2003, Shanghai investors have taken over the Welz Gas Cylinder Ltd., a manufacturer of compressed gas cylinders. The new Berlin-Brandenburg International 2012 airport, will increase the attractiveness of the region. Especially for companies in China, where flight time to and from Asia is now shortened by several hours.
